A school trip to Giethoorn

Pupils steer their own electric boats, the class joins a guided canal cruise, and the museum explains how a village without roads came to be.

School group on a canal boat in Giethoorn
Why Giethoorn works for schools

Active, outdoors and easy to organise

Giethoorn is a village built on water: canals instead of streets, wooden bridges and thatched farmhouses. For pupils it is an outdoor lesson in history, nature and teamwork, and for teachers it is a day that is simple to run from one location.

Our rental dock is at the entrance of the village canal with free coach parking and large toilets. The class arrives, checks in and is on the water within minutes.

  • Free coach parking at the dock
  • Fast group check-in
  • Large on-site toilets
  • Team speaks Dutch, English and German

Slow and quietThe speed limit in the village is 6 km/h. Pupils get a short briefing at the dock and the navigation app keeps them on the marked routes.

Questions from teachers

How old do pupils have to be to steer a boat?

The person steering must be at least 12 years old. Younger pupils can of course come along; an adult joins each boat.

How many boats do you have for a large class?

We have more than 40 electric boats for 4 to 12 people, so even a large year group can go out at the same time. Let us know the group size when you request a quote.

Are life jackets included?

Children’s life jackets are available as an extra (€ 4.95 each) and can be added to the booking. Tell us how many you need.

Can we park a coach?

Yes, there is free coach parking at our location. See the parking page.

What about lunch?

There is a restaurant a short walk from the boats that offers lunch options for groups, or order picnic baskets to take on board. See food & drinks.

What if it rains?

The canal cruise boats are covered and heated. The self-drive boats are open, so bring rain jackets, or switch to a cruise.
