Public holidays are our busiest days

A day off with good weather means one thing in Giethoorn: full. At Easter, King’s Day, Ascension Day and Whitsun, our fleet of more than 40 boats is often entirely out on the water between 10:30 and 15:30. Booking online in advance guarantees your boat and gives you the best price.

Still want it quiet? Start at 09:00 or after 16:00. The village canal is calm then, and with the off-peak discount you pay less as well.

  • Book online = boat guaranteed
  • Start early or late = calm and a discount
  • Canal cruise as a back-up when boats are sold out

Plan smart

Five tips for a public holiday

Book onlineOn public holidays the boats often sell out. Booking online in advance guarantees your boat and gives you the best price.
Start at 09:00Calm water, lowest price. By 11:00 you would otherwise be queuing at the bridges.
Park with usFree parking at Zuiderpad 14A and at Hotel Old Art. Come early: the public car parks in the village fill up fast.
Choose the cruiseIf the boats are full, the canal cruise (€ 10 per person, daily) is a fine alternative without steering yourself.
Reserve a tableThe terraces fill up too. Reserve at the dock or take a picnic hamper on board.

Questions about public holidays

Can I rent a boat in Giethoorn at Whitsun?

Yes, but book ahead. Whitsun (24–25 May 2026, 16–17 May 2027) is our busiest spring weekend and the boats regularly sell out.

Is Giethoorn open on public holidays?

Yes. The village is always accessible and our boat rental and cruises run on every public holiday, from 09:00 until sunset.

How busy is it on Ascension Day?

Very busy, particularly on the Thursday and Saturday between 10:30 and 15:30. Our advice: start early or sail after 16:00.

Are prices different on public holidays?

Public holidays that fall at the weekend carry the weekend rate (+20%). A weekday holiday such as Ascension Day has the weekday rate, off-peak discount included.

What is there to do in Giethoorn on King’s Day?

Sailing, walking the Binnenpad and the terraces. Come early: the car parks in the village are full by around 11:00. With us you park for free.

Can I sail at Christmas?

Yes. The heated cruise boats sail every day, and on dry days you can rent a boat until sunset around 16:30.
