Advice by weather type

What to do when it is…

Sunny

Sunny

Rent a boat for 1 to 6 hours, take the route across the Bovenwijde lake and bring a picnic hamper. Pack sunscreen and water: there is little shade on the lake.

Raining

Raining

Rain jacket on and off you go: the village is wonderfully atmospheric in the rain and the water is at its quietest. Prefer dry and warm? The cruise boats are covered and heated.

Windy

Windy

In the village canal you barely notice the wind. The open Bovenwijde can get choppy; choose the 1- or 2-hour village route or join a skippered cruise.

Cold

Cold

Wrapped up warm, a self-drive boat is lovely in winter too, and the canal cruise is heated. Warm up afterwards at the dock.

Reading the forecast like a skipper

Reading the forecast like a skipper

Look beyond the chance of rain and check the wind. Our electric whisper boats are stable and easy to steer, but on the lake a force 5 or more feels a good deal stronger than in the village. The canals are sheltered by the farmhouses and trees.

Showers here tend to pass quickly. Moor at a terrace or under a tree (never under a bridge) and wait it out. If you rent for a full day, you have all the room you need to let the weather decide when you sail.

Questions about the weather

What is the warmest month in Giethoorn?

July and August, with an average daytime high of 22 °C. May, July and August are also the sunniest, with about 7 hours of sunshine a day.

Can I sail if it rains?

Yes, absolutely. The cruise boats are covered and heated. In an open boat with a rain jacket the village is at its calmest and most atmospheric: fewer boats, drops on the water and mist over the Bovenwijde. Showers usually pass quickly here.

How late can I rent a boat?

Until sunset. In summer that is around 21:30, in winter around 16:30. Your last possible start time depends on how long you rent for.

Is it cold on the water?

On the water it feels a few degrees cooler than on land, especially in the wind. Bring an extra layer in spring and autumn.

What happens in a thunderstorm?

We do not sail in thunderstorms. Your booking is moved free of charge or refunded.
