July and August
High season in numbers
Dutch summer school holidays are staggered across three regions, running from early July to the end of August. Add the German Sommerferien from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, our main German markets, and the result is clear: from mid-July to mid-August it is busy every day, peaking between 10:30 and 15:30.
Even then, Giethoorn is very doable. Start at 09:00 or sail after 16:00 and you have the canals largely to yourself. And with an online booking, your boat is guaranteed.

20 July–14 AugustAll three Dutch regions and NRW are on holiday at once. The four busiest weeks of the year.
WeekendsSaturdays and Sundays are busy throughout the summer holidays, with day-trippers added in, and the weekend rate makes sailing 20% dearer.
First week of July and last week of AugustOnly one region is off: noticeably quieter, with the same long evenings.
24–30 AugustFestival week, with the Gondelvaart on Saturday 29 August. The village is full; book your boat well ahead.

How to enjoy a quiet sail in the summer holidays

The day-trippers have gone and the light turns golden. Take a drinks box along and sail back at sunset.

Take the long route
Beyond the village canal, across the Bovenwijde to the quiet side canals, it is peaceful even in August.
Stay the night and be first on the water
Sleep at Hotel Old Art, right by the dock, or Hotel Giethoorn nearby, and set off at 09:00 while the day-trippers are still on the motorway.

North weeks 30–32 (20 July–7 August), South weeks 31–33 (27 July–14 August), Central weeks 32–34 (3–21 August).
Is Giethoorn quiet during the bouwvak?
No. The builders’ holiday falls right in the middle of the school holidays and the German Sommerferien, so it is actually the busiest time. Start early or sail in the evening.
Can I still rent a boat without a reservation in the summer holidays?
Sometimes, but often not between 10:30 and 15:30. Booking online in advance guarantees your boat and gives you the best price.
Which week is quietest in summer?
The first week of July and the last week of August, when only one Dutch region is off. Weekdays are always quieter than weekends.
How late can you sail in the summer holidays?
